Alachua is a city in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,098 at the 2000 census.

Alachua was established in 1884 on a railroad line, after the railroad had bypassed nearby Newnansville. Alachua got a post office in 1887 and was incorporated as a city on 12 April 1905, at which time it had a population of 526 people.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 75.2 km˛ (29.0 mi˛). 74.9 km˛ (28.9 mi˛) of it is land and 0.4 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it (0.52%) is water.

Alachua also has a large Hare Krishna population and a Hare Krishna temple.
